Pathways Intensive Preliteracy Programs

Designed by our Speech-Language Pathologists to support early literacy

Pathways is offering preliteracy groups to assist children in developing strong foundational skills for learning how to read. These are designed for preschool to grade 2 students, and geared towards children who have speech and language delays/disorders, learning disabilities, or a family history of reading disorders (including dyslexia). Research indicates that the window of time for the most effective intervention is between preschool and grade 1. At Pathways, we strive to offer a proactive rather than reactive approach for those that fall within the “at risk” categories.

Preliteracy skills include rhyming, phonics, auditory recognition of sound, word segmentation and sound-letter connections. Our groups are not intended to teach children to read, rather to give them strong foundational skills so that they can become independent readers in the future.

Literacy groups are designed by Registered Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) and Speech Language Assistants (SLA). Weekly group sessions are led by SLAs with consultation by an SLP. These sessions will run for 1 hour over a 10 week period. During the 10 week period, parents/guardians will be asked to attend one educational session led by an SLP. This session will focus on educational techniques to use at home with an opportunity for open group discussion for questions.

Approximately one month prior to the start, an SLP will have a 20 minute screening appointment with each child to ensure that your child is grouped appropriately.

Existing clients, please discuss with us if this can be done in a treatment session.

Please contact us to book a screening to determine what level best suits your child.
