Good nutrition is one of the cornerstones of health and well-being. Diet is especially important for growing children, the eating habits they learn now will help set the stage for robust health later in life. Proper nutrition is necessary for children to have energy, optimal brain function, muscle growth and development, strong immunity and stable emotional health.

Numerous childhood issues such as, eczema, allergies, ear infections, bed wetting, asthma and hyperactivity all have direct links to diet and nutrition. The good news is children can recover quickly, from any kind of imbalance, when their bodies are receiving the right nutrients, in the right amounts. The Nutrition Nook is designed to provide parents with ongoing information and education related to food and how it can help your child achieve his/her potential.

Magnesium and manganese provide energy to the brain. Try the following recipe, jam-packed full of both nutrients, to fuel your child’s brain:

Almond Date Dark Cocoa Balls

Pathways Pediatric Services Nutrition Nook - Cocoa Balls

1 cup almond meal/flour (if your child has a nut allergy substitute hemp hearts)
1 cup dates (fresh, dried or date rolls – if using dried soak dates 2 hours before using)
1 TBS almond butter (or natural/organic peanut butter)
3 TBS coconut oil
3 TBS raw cacao
2 tsp cinnamon
1 TBS honey or maple syrup
Shredded coconut

Put ingredients in a food processor or blender. Process until fully combined. Roll into 1” balls and roll in shredded coconut. Keep refrigerated.
